Let Plan “A” Be Your Final Goal…!

No Plan B: The Only Way to Win Your Plan “A”

By Dr. Sunil S Rana

The road to the Indian Civil Services is not merely a career path; it is a calling. It demands more than just intelligence, hard work, and discipline; it demands undivided commitment. Yet, many aspirants unknowingly sabotage their own dreams by keeping a “Plan B” in the background.

You might have heard these familiar lines:

- “Ek baar try zaroor karenge Civil Services mein.”

- “Logon ko pata to chale ki koi hamaare khaandaan mein IAS banne ki tayyari kar raha hai.”

- “If I can’t clear it in five years, I’ll start my own business or take up another job.”

- “Even if I fail in IAS, my preparation will help me get into subordinate services.”

These statements might sound harmless, even practical. But in reality, they plant the seed of escape before you’ve even stepped onto the battlefield. A safety net might save you from falling; but it also stops you from leaping with full force.

The Psychology of “Plan B”

Human nature is simple: when we know there’s an easier alternative, our mind never gives its best to the harder choice. A Plan B becomes a cushion that absorbs your drive, your hunger, and your urgency. You start thinking, “It’s okay if I don’t make it; I have something else to fall back on.”

And this, dear aspirants, is the exact moment when your Plan A begins to die.

Why Only One Goal Works

The Civil Services Examination is one of the most competitive tests on the planet. Lakhs of graduates aspire for it every year, yet only a few hundred secure those coveted positions;  IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS. The difference between those who make it and those who don’t is rarely about talent; it is about focus.

Winners walk into this race with only one vision in their minds: “I will clear it. I have no other choice.”

They don’t keep a backup; they burn the bridges behind them. And when there’s no way back, there’s only one way forward; victory.

Your Energy Is Limited - Guard It

Every alternative you consider, every backup plan you make, steals a little piece of your energy. Instead of sharpening your sword for the main battle, you are polishing weapons for a war you might never fight.

When all your thoughts, time, and talent are poured into one single mission, your probability of success multiplies.

Plan to Win, Not to Escape

If you want to wear that prestigious badge, to have the nation salute your dedication, you must adopt the mindset of a warrior:

- No distractions.

- No parallel tracks.

- No “what ifs.”

As someone who has seen countless journeys in this arena, my advice is simple:

Do not prepare to “try” Civil Services. Prepare to conquer it.

Burn your Plan B. Let Plan A be your only road, your only dream, your only obsession. And when you pour your entire being into that dream, you will be amazed at how the universe bends in your favour.
